Alfred C. Schmidt is the retired CIO of Arch Chemicals, where he was also Vice President of Information Technology. He has more than 25 years of information systems experience and was responsible for the leadership, planning and strategy development of Arch’s global information technology. Schmidt came to Arch Chemicals from Olin Corporation, where he was Vice President of Information Technology. Previously, he was Executive Director of Operations and Technology at Pitney Bowes.
Schmidt started his career at AT&T’s Bell Labs, where he was involved in research, product development and graphics hardware. He also served as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Public Health Service in the Artificial Heart Program at the National Institutes of Health.
Schmidt received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of California Berkeley. He holds an M.S. in engineering and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University. He also attended the Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School. A recipient of 16 patents, Schmidt has lectured and written frequently on business reengineering, information systems, facsimile systems, integrated services and digital communications.
