James Oliver is the Founder and Managing Director of Principle One, a multi-disciplinary, IT and audiovisual services company that operates throughout Asia. James is also co-founder and Managing Director of One Space, a unique integrated architecture, technology and interior design practice. Both companies are head-quartered in Hong Kong.
His background is in Computer Science, spending his early career at British Telecom Laboratories. In 1993, he joined Goldman Sachs in London. There he was located on the equities trading floor and helped run the systems that enabled ever speedier, more complex financial transactions be structured and executed. In 1996, Goldman Sachs relocated him to Hong Kong to manage what was known as Enterprise Technology – covering all information technology except in house application development.
Following a 10 year career at Goldman Sachs, in what would be his final role as head of Enterprise Technology for all Asia, it was time for Oliver to sate his entrepreneurial appetite. He wanted to challenge himself to be at the centre of a business rather than playing a supporting role. In Hong Kong in May 2003, he opened the first Principle One office.
Principle One now has people located in four countries, with blue-chip and boutique clients in more than thirty locations across Asia.
As momentum built for Principle One, Oliver saw the opportunity for a unique collaboration of disciplines, to better serve businesses. In December 2004, he co-founded One Space with Architect Greg Pearce. One Space is the only integrated architecture, technology, and interior design practice in Asia. This award-winning practice shares offices with Principle One.
