Thomas Cowan is Associate Director of the Center for Technology Management at Columbia University. This follows a career starting at IBM, and then building software companies.
Tom is a technologist. His expertise is in the use of technology to create strategic differentiation, and in the leadership that is required to execute on strategic differentiation.
Tom rose through the leadership ranks to become CEO, Board Director, and Chairman for ten companies and boards of directors, including public, private, non-profit, and academic organizations.
He has served on the boards of OutlookSoft, Tivoli, Tagetik, PGA.com, and NHL.com. He has chaired audit, compensation, governance, and nominating committees. Tom has also been Executive in Residence at RockRidge Capital Partners.
Tom is currently Associate Director of the Center for Technology Management at Columbia University. He also serves as board director and chairman for a number of technology companies, and is an advisor to investment firms and technology CEOs.
He is the author of From Idea to Business, Business Basics, and Leadership Basics. Tom's academic background includes undergraduate work at Wake Forest University, an MBA from the University of South Carolina, and advanced studies at Columbia University.
